Who Can Donate?

Anyone aged from 12 months to 90 years old can be considered as an organ and tissue donor. You shouldn’t assume you’re not healthy enough or are either too young or old.

The factors that determine a person’s suitability include:

  • The circumstances of how, where and when a person dies - only around one percent of people will die in circumstances likely to make them medically suitable to become organ donors.
  • Any past medical history - only a few medical conditions (such as transmissible diseases like HIV) preventing someone being a donor.
  • Age is considered and the condition of organs and tissue but you may still become a donor if you smoke, wear glasses, drink alcohol or regularly take medication.
